Harry Dresden Files by: Jim Butcher

Reviewed by: Nearly Headless Nick

The Dresden Files, by Jim Butcher, are some of the best books in this entire library. If you like fantasy or mystery then this is the book for you! The adventure begins with a man named Harry Dresden, who is a professional wizard. He spends his days selling his services to people who need a “wizard.” Anything from finding lost keys to solving murders, although he refuses to do parties.

This book is a perfect mixture of funny and exciting. With his helper, Bob, a skull inhabited by the spirit of an old (and sometimes naughty) wizard, Harry sets out to solve a series of mysteries. His journey starts when a woman comes to his shop asking for help. There’s something going on with her husband, and she’d like to know what. He decides to take the case because of his unsatisfactory financial position. Then he’s picked up by a passing limo. He meets a man with a cool and controlled demeanor. What happens during the ride is a shock to everyone. When the Chicago PD knocks on his door, the party really starts going.

The Harry Dresden files are an amazing series. Once you start you won’t want to put them down until you find out everything about Harry’s life. If you are looking for a book, I implore you to go pick up the first book, Storm Front. You won’t regret it!

Twilight Series by: Stephenie Meyer

A Book That Bites

You know it, you love it, and if you don’t you’ve heard all about it! It’s none other than the Twilight series! In 2005 Stephanie Meyer wrote this amazing series. Just three years later, in 2008, the book was made into the movies that left viewers wanting more. I thought this series would be fitting to blog about seeing as Halloween is right around the corner! Before reading this blog, I have only one request; DON’T judge a book by its movie.

Twilight focuses on a love triangle amongst its three main characters; Bella, Jacob, and of course the fabulous, sparkling Edward. Bella Swan is not a spectacular girl by any means. She is what society would call a normal teenager. When Bella decides to go live with her Dad in Forks, Washington, she meets Edward Cullen. Immediately she is drawn to his mysteriousness and charming good looks. Along with meeting Edward, she is reconnected with her childhood friend Jacob Black whom she also develops feelings for.

As Bella attempts to file through her love interests, she discovers some secrets along the way. The fabulous Edward is really an immortal vampire, ready to sink his teeth into her, and her innocent childhood playmate is actually a werewolf. The two boys fight throughout the story to win Bella’s love and maintain the peace between the Black and Cullen families.

This plot is way too simple right? WRONG!! Eventually the plot thickens (muahhahahahaaa!!) Both Edward and Jacob end up having to work together to protect Bella from other vampires who want to kill her. And that is where I’ll stop! Read the rest of the book to find out what happens to Bella and who wins her in the end! Remember when reading this series that the movies are a very poor representation of the books. The books are extremely well-written and entertaining. Don’t be afraid to cuddle up with Twilight; I promise it won’t bite!
